Goldstone, also known as aventurine glass, is man-made but is long known and used for it’s beauty since at least the early 12th century. Due to its copper content, it is often used in the same manner as copper jewelry to gain the same benefits.
To make goldstone, it is first necessary to produce glass, which is made by melting silica made up of quartz sand or ground quartz, with various other chemical elements. Copper salts are added to this molten glass material which is then left to cool down in a low oxygen atmosphere very slowly. As the glass cools down, the copper converts into a purely metallic state, exhibiting its hallmark shiny flecks. It is actually tiny particles of copper that get suspended in the glass. They are generally hexagonal and triangular in shape.
For purple goldstone, manganese is added, for green goldstone, chromium oxide is added, and for blue goldstone, cobalt is added.
The hardness of Goldstone on the Moh’s scale is 5.5.
